Am I skinny fat?
Skinny fat means a normal BMI with a high body fat percentage. Researchers call it normal weight obesity, and BMI alone cannot show it.
Skinny fat body fat percentage by age
Here, skinny fat starts where Gallagher's healthy range ends: the body fat the study matched to a BMI of 25. Over that line, your BMI says normal weight, but your body fat matches what the study found at an overweight BMI.
| Age | Healthy range | Skinny fat from | Obese range from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ages 20 to 39 | 8 to 19.9% | 20% | 25% |
| Ages 40 to 59 | 11 to 21.9% | 22% | 28% |
| Ages 60 to 79 | 13 to 24.9% | 25% | 30% |
| Age | Healthy range | Skinny fat from | Obese range from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ages 20 to 39 | 21 to 32.9% | 33% | 39% |
| Ages 40 to 59 | 23 to 33.9% | 34% | 40% |
| Ages 60 to 79 | 24 to 35.9% | 36% | 42% |
The study included white, African American and Asian adults, and the lines differ by ethnic group. This table shows one set.

No single agreed number
Studies draw the line in different places. In 6,125 Swiss adults, the share of women with normal weight obesity ran from 1.4% to 27.8% depending on the definition used, while in men it stayed under 1% with every one. The authors concluded that lines set by age and sex are better than fixed ones, and the checker above uses lines set by age and sex.

BMI cannot tell fat from muscle
BMI only uses your height and weight. In a review of 25 studies covering 31,968 people, the usual BMI cut-offs for obesity missed about half of people with excess body fat.
Age and sex matter as well. In 706 adults, BMI explained 25% of the differences in body fat between people, and 67% once age and sex were added.
A body fat calculator that only uses height, weight, age and sex gives everyone with the same BMI, age and sex the same answer, so it cannot spot skinny fat either. A 2025 Lancet commission recommends using BMI for screening, not as a measure of one person's health, and confirming excess fat with a body fat or waist measurement.
A free check you can do now: is your waist under half your height? A review of 78 studies found the waist-to-height ratio predicted diabetes and cardiovascular disease better than BMI, with 0.5 as the line for both men and women.

Skinny fat and health
These are links seen in studies, not proof that body fat is the cause.
- 2.24x
The odds of metabolic syndrome with a normal BMI and high body fat, compared with a normal BMI and normal body fat, across 24 studies of 75,201 adults. Diabetes and high blood pressure were more likely too.
- 2.2x
The risk of dying from cardiovascular disease for women with a normal BMI and high body fat, compared with women with a normal BMI and low body fat, over a median 8.8 years in a US survey.
- 1.78x
The risk of death over 15 years for adults aged 20 to 49, at any BMI, with body fat of 27% or more (men) or 44% or more (women). BMI itself showed no significant link.
- 1.87x
The risk of death for a man with a BMI of 22 and fat around the middle, compared with a man with a similar BMI without it.

How to fix skinny fat
Skinny fat is about what your weight is made of, so the aim is more muscle and less fat, not a lower number on the scale.
Lift weights
In trials in healthy adults, full-body strength training for 4 weeks or more lowered body fat by 1.46 percentage points on average, compared with no exercise.
Eat enough protein
In 49 trials of strength training, extra protein added lean mass. Once total protein reached about 1.6 g per kg of body weight a day, more added nothing.
Don't only cut calories
In a review of 7 trials in people with high body fat and a BMI under 30, the two calorie-cutting diets gave the most weight loss but also lost lean mass, so body fat fell only 0.8 to 1.1 points. The two higher protein diets lowered it by 2.0 to 2.8 points.
Keep moving
The WHO advises adults to get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity a week, plus regular muscle-strengthening activity.

Skinny fat, answered
What does skinny fat mean?
Your BMI is in the normal range (18.5 to 24.9) but your body fat percentage is high. Researchers call it normal weight obesity. The scale says you are fine, but more of your weight is fat than your BMI suggests.
What body fat percentage is skinny fat?
There is no single agreed number. The definitions in the table below draw the line at 23.1% to 25% for men and 30% to 35% for women. This checker uses the lines from Gallagher et al. (2000), set by age and sex: skinny fat starts at 20% for men and 33% for women aged 20 to 39, and the line rises with age. For men aged 20 to 59, that is lower than any definition in the table.
Can BMI tell if I'm skinny fat?
No. BMI only uses height and weight, so it cannot see what your weight is made of. In studies, its usual cut-offs for obesity missed about half of people with excess body fat. You need a body fat number. A waist measurement is a useful second check.
Is skinny fat unhealthy?
It has been linked with metabolic syndrome, diabetes and high blood pressure, and in one US study with a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in women. These studies show links, not proof of cause.
How do I check if I'm skinny fat?
Get a body fat number, for example from a DXA scan, a body fat scale, calipers, a tape measure formula or a photo scan, and compare it with the line for your age and sex. A free extra check: a waist bigger than half your height has been linked with a higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How do you fix skinny fat?
Strength training and enough protein. In trials in healthy adults, lifting lowered body fat percentage compared with no exercise. In people with high body fat and a BMI under 30, higher protein diets did better than cutting calories alone, which also lost lean mass.
Is skinny fat more common in women?
It tends to be. A Swiss study found it in under 1% of men but in 1.4% to 27.8% of women, depending on the definition used. A review of 24 studies also found it more often in women and in older adults.
What is the difference between skinny fat, MONW and TOFI?
Skinny fat, or normal weight obesity, is a normal BMI with high body fat. MONW (metabolically obese, normal weight) is a normal weight with the insulin resistance usually seen with obesity. TOFI (thin outside, fat inside) is more fat inside the belly and liver than your size suggests, a name that came from whole-body MRI scans.
